The scheme – a first in Scotland, and the most wide-ranging in the UK – revolves around Restorative Justice Meetings, where the victim can choose to meet the offender in a safe, structured and neutral environment. Restorative Justice Meetings will be offered to victims of Juvenile Hate Crime in Edinburgh and West Lothian. Adult Restorative Justice Meetings for East Lothian, Midlothian and the Scottish Borders are currently being planned.
At a Restorative Justice Meeting, those who have had a Hate Crime (any crime motivated by prejudice against disability, race, religion, sexual orientation or transgender) committed against them by a young person can:
