Criminal justice organisations want new Titan prisons abandoned.

Sep 07, 2009

from Percy Weller's blog:

Can you believe this, at a time when you can’t open a newspaper without reading about someone being murdered, when carrying of guns is commonplace, 1,000’s of criminals are getting away without prison sentences and some of our prisons only hold foreigners thirty-five leading criminal justice organisations have today written to Justice Secretary Jack Straw calling for the Government’s plans for three Titan prisons to be abandoned.

The signatories to the letter – who include the Prison Reform Trust, the Prison Officers’ Association, Liberty, Nacro, the International Centre for Prison Studies and Napo – argue that Titan prisons would squander billions of pounds of taxpayers’ money and are not a solution to the current prisons crisis. Published on the day that the Government’s consultation on Titan prisons closes , the letter calls on Jack Straw to focus on addressing the causes of the growing prison population instead of pursuing an expensive prison-building programme....

....I suggest the signatories, see below, of the letter should go and live in the so called ’sink estates’ of our cities and see if they are of the same opinion a few months later.
