“Breaking Down the Barriers to get Prison Numbers Down - Alternatives That Work”.

In October, Prison Fellowship New Zealand and several partner organisations will host a four-day conference exploring alternatives for lowering the prison population.

Where: Silverstream Retreat, Upper Hutt, New Zealand

 Topics to be explored include:

  • What are we really doing about victims?
  • Does restorative justice work for victims and offenders alike?
  • Are there alternative ways of punishing people instead of prison?
  • What occurs when our prisons treat people with more dignity?
  • When is the right time to intervene with our youth?
  • Where is marae-based justice?
  • Could NZ benefit from having open prisons?
  • What role is there for halfway houses and aftercare facilities?
  • Could NZ ever become a less punitive society?
  • What happens the day one leaves prison?
  • Plus real life stories from victims and reformed offenders
