Federal Probation publishes paper on “Pono Kaulike: Restorative Justice and Solution-Focused Approaches to Domestic Violence in Hawaii”

The Pono Kaulike program provided facilitated restorative justice processes combined with solution-focused brief therapy with subjects who plead guilty to crimes including assault, harassment, criminal property damage, criminal trespass, terroristic threatening and negligent homicide.
Program results were highly positive in terms of both participant satisfaction and recidivism. Recidivism rates were compared to those of a control group. The recidivism rate in the control group was nearly double that in the experimental group.
The paper concludes: “Recidivism results for the Pono Kaulike program indicate that restorative justice and solution-focused approaches are more effective at preventing repeat crime and helping victims than our current system.”
The paper was published in the June 2009 issue of Federal Probation and was written by Lorenn Walker, consultant and Leslie A. Hayashi, District Court Judge, State of Hawaii. (It is a follow-up to Walker’s and Hayashi’s Federal Probation paper that appeared in the Restorative Practices eForumin December 2008.)
