restorative justice and bullying

Posted by Jeff Studebaker at Apr 23, 2010 02:03 PM
Do you see restorative justice being appropriate for an anti-bullying program within the schools? I believe RJ can fit, but several of my colleagues do not agree. Their hesitance revolves around the issue of re-victimizing the person who was the target of bully's behavior.

I feel a great pressure to be pro-active in dealing with bullying behavior. Do you have any thoughts or ideas for me?

Jeff,

There are always concerns about revictimisation in any restorative process. However, there are programmes using restorative processes with bullying in both school and workplace settings. Try searching the RJ library with "bully" and "bullying" to find resources.

I truly believe RJ is the only encouraging response to bullying. You might also want to look at Ron & Roxanne Claassen's book "Discipline that Restores". It's about RJ in the classroom. I am aware of some very good RJ work taking place in London which addresses bullying. I think those who are concerned about re-victimization often have no creative solutions to offer.

Victims need options that help them heal after crimes are committed or threats of injury occur.

Bullying in schools

I do think RJ is very appropriate. However, it cannot wait and simply be the "end of the line" prescription.

I advocate for regular talking circles and additional activities, based around current school curriculums, that help build relationships.

This is the ultimate in proactive action to address bullying. The conferences may come later on and they will have more of an impact as you pull in stronger relationships.
