Center for Restorative Justice braces for changes to marijuana law

With the state likely to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana this summer, the local nonprofit that handles court diversion cases is preparing for the changes....
Cipriano said decriminalization is not legalization, a distinction she fears may be lost on some young people as well as adults. Those caught with less than an ounce of marijuana who are 21 and over will face a civil fine, but for those between the ages of 16 and 20 the penalty is expected to be similar to an underage drinking offense.

Restorative justice for recovering addicts

Restorative justice is an alternative method of justice that involves offenders coming face to face with their victims and the larger community to repair the harm they’ve done. It is often used when dealing with young or first-time offenders, and keeps them out of the mainstream justice system in the hope they’ll turn their lives around.
Gillian Lindquist, co-ordinator of the Victoria Restorative Justice Society, says this same philosophy can be used to help recovering drug or alcohol addicts.

Students won't be prosecuted after drug raid
From the Article by Darrell Cole in the Amherst Daily News:
Most, if not all students arrested at Amherst Regional High School following a drug raid earlier this month will escape criminal prosecution.
Deputy Chief Ian Naylor of the Amherst Police Department said that while interviews still have to be completed with two of the 30 youth arrested, the 28 young people and all five adults detained qualify for either restorative justice or adult diversion.
"Our goal has always been finding a positive outcome and what we've been saying from the beginning is that we would look at all situations to see if they met the criteria for referral to the programs," Naylor said. "We have to be fair and we have to be consistent and that's what we have done."

Why restorative justice helps us with "belonging"

We started a new Circle program called CSI-Circles. Controlled Substance Intervention – responding to those who have gotten citations/tickets for marijuana possession or parapernalia charges. We use Restorative Justice Circle process with booklets from the Change Company. Our community members in the Circle include people in recovery, with significant life experiences impacted by addiction and previous drug use. We focus on restorative values and the talking circle is the vehicle for impacting people.
