This book grew out of papers and discussions at the 24th Cropwood Round Table Conference in Cambridge, England, 28-29 June 2000. The purpose for the conference was to address future directions for community penalties. Essays in the book deal with theoretical and practical matters: historical and contemporary contexts for community penalties; social, governmental, and criminological developments affecting community penalties; strategies such as cognitive-behavioralism and âwhat worksâ?; compliance issues; accountability in the implementation of community penalties; technological implications; and issues concerning community, public safety, and restorative justice in relation to community penalties. Contributors include leading academics in criminology, many of whom also have first-hand practical experience in corrections and probation services. An appendix summarizes key conclusions that arose from the conference.
