Summary

Walgrave, Lode (1997). "What is at stake in restorative justice for juveniles." In Restorative justice for juveniles: Potentialities, risks and problems for research, ed. Lode Walgrave, 11-16. A selection of papers presented at the International Conference, Leuven, May 12-14, 1997. With a preface by Lode Walgrave. Leuven, Belgium: Leuven University Press.

In this essay or preface introducing a set of papers from an international conference, Walgrave examines key issues regarding restorative justice with respect to juvenile criminal justice. He argues why, given the failures of current juvenile justice, this is the right time for restorative justice. He further argues for a “maximalistâ€? restorative justice approach. In this view, restorative justice should be a fully fledged alternative, not merely a set of different techniques incorporated into penal or re-educative juvenile justice systems. Toward this goal, Walgrave urges further experimentation, reflection, and empirical research to develop and apply the restorative justice paradigm.
