Declaring that the current criminal justice system is in crisis, Pranis advances the potential of restorative justice theory and practice as a comprehensive alternative. However, restorative justice has had little actual impact in transforming mainstream criminal justice. In view of this reality, Pranis maintains that broad-based community support is necessary to implement a comprehensive restorative justice system. Toward this end, Pranis discusses principles and strategies for change toward restorative justice values in communities, case examples showing those principles and strategies in practice, and challenges and obstacles to restorative reform.
