Victim offender conferencing is a community-based restorative approach to dealing with crime. In this type of conferencing, all those with a stake in the crime come together to respond to or “resolve��? the crime collectively. An impartial, trained mediator from the community guides the process. This paper presents results from research conducted by Amanda Dissel on three pilot programs for victim offender conferencing in South Africa. It consists of an outline of the research methodology, a summary of the findings, an overview of the victim offender conferencing project, description and analysis of cases referred to the project, and recommendations for the future application of victim offender conferencing.
