Schiff examines the effects of restorative justice interventions on juvenile offenders. In doing so, she distinguishes between restorative justice processes (the means through which victim and offender come to agreement about action to be taken) and restorative justice sanctions (the actual agreements achieved through various processes). Her focus then is on the outcomes of restorative justice processes and sanctions for juvenile offenders. Are such processes and sanctions restorative for young offenders? Processes reviewed include victim-offender mediation and family group conferencing. Sanctions reviewed include restitution and community service. Schiff also notes gaps in existing research. She recommends directions for future research, as well as some outcome measures to help standardize empirical evaluations.
