A critical element in any discussion of restorative and transformative justice is the relationship between means and ends, that is, the extent to which each contributes to restoring relationships that have been severed in some way. Paul McCold and Lode Walgrave, in their debate over how broad or inclusive the boundaries of restorative justice should be, have addressed such issues in a variety of ways. One of the important outcomes of their discussion and of any discussion on restorative justice is the importance of hearing the stories of those who have been harmed, because emotional resotration is seen as a key element in justice done.
