Summary

Van Ness, Daniel W (1996). Perspectives on Achieving Satisfying Justice: Values and Principles of Restorative Justice. Paper presented at Achieving Satisfying Justice Symposium, Vancouver, BC on March 21, 1997

In this paper Daniel Van Ness examines the elements and process of constructing a restorative program. As with building houses, there are many variations or types of restorative programs. Yet some components are key to any type of restorative program: the foundation of the program, or its underlying principles; support for the structure of the program, which are its core values; and the vision that shapes and guides the program. Van Ness identifies the key principles, values, and vision of restorative programs as a means of explaining why some programs appear to be more 'satisfying' for those who participate in them.
