Umbreit notes that family group conferencing is an exciting development in restorative justice. It opens new opportunities for crime victims to become involved in sanctioning of the offender. Yet, like all innovations, it contains potential problems that must be examined. Therefore, Umbreit urges those involved in victim advocacy, family group conferencing, and victim offender mediation to continue a dialogue about potential benefits and risks of various approaches.
