This document consists of sample materials from John Braithwaite’s book Restorative justice and responsive regulation (New York: Oxford University Press, 2002). The first section of the document comes from chapter 1 – “The fall and rise of restorative justiceâ€? – where Braithwaite argues that restorative justice is a major development in human thought. This development is grounded in traditions of justice from the ancient Arab, Greek, and Roman civilizations; public assemblies of the ancient Germanic peoples; ancient Indian Hindu thought and practice; and ancient Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian traditions. The second longer section of the document derives from chapter 6 World peacemaking.â€? In this chapter Braithwaite details his perspectives on the use of the restorative justice and responsive regulation paradigms in the pursuit of world peace.
