Through a historical sketch, discussion of theory, diagrams, and concrete examples, Gerard and Nelson describe a community conferencing program in the inner city of Minneapolis. It is a demonstration project developed by Central City Neighborhoods Partnership – a coalition of inner city communities – in cooperation with criminal justice authorities. This is a grassroots effort aimed at addressing low-level crime in a way that makes offenders accountable to the victim and the community. Through face-to-face dialogue, and with an emphasis on healing, all parties affected by a crime can be involved in the justice process and outcome.
