At the 10th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Treatment of Offenders (April 10-17, 2000), and at a meeting of the UN’s Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice immediately following, participants from a number of governments discussed restorative justice theory and practice, as well as a proposed resolution entitled “Basic Principles on the Use of Restorative Justice Programmes in Criminal Matters.â€? The aim for the resolution is that it would offer guidance for member states of the UN. The article summarizes UN deliberations and actions relating to restorative justice and to the resolution in particular.
