Laura Mirsky in this article provides a summary of a chapter written by Paul McCold in the book Repositioning Restorative Justice: Restorative Justice, Criminal Justice and Social Context (Willan Publishing, 2003). In his chapter McCold, director of research for the International Institute for Restorative Practices, surveys thirty years of evaluation research of restorative justice programs from 1971 to 2001. The survey deals with program assessments available in English, and particularly with mediation and conferencing programs that have conducted and published the results of their assessments. McCold’s objective in writing the survey is to see what evidence exists to judge whether restorative justice can be a credible response to crime and conflicts in society.
