Pat Oles is Associate Professor of Social Work and Dean of Student Affairs at Skidmore College in Sarasota Springs, New York. Through interaction with ideas in this book and from his own experience at Skidmore, he concludes this volume with reflections on restorative justice in college and university settings. Specifically, he participated with other faculty, students, and staff in developing Skidmore’s restorative approach to campus discipline, the Integrity Board. During this process, they all wrestled with questions about how judicial systems could promote caring and compassion and simultaneously deter hateful and destructive behavior on campus. In this chapter then, Oles considers the benefits of a restorative approach from am institutional perspective, challenges to restorative justice in such a setting, and the value of a restorative approach especially with respect to contemporary students.
