The author reports on the Kettering Adult Reparation Scheme in Northamptonshire, a three year experimental diversion and mediation for adult offenders begun in 1986. Most cases are pre-trial referrals from the police prosecution department and include primarily theft, criminal damage and assault. Findings include that reparation can be used in the service of diversion without the interests of victims being subordinated to those of the offender and that it offers the police a more credible alternative to prosecution. Strengths and weaknesses of the program are discussed.
