For more than a decade, the American Humane Association has provided training, technical assistance, and written materials to initiate and shape family group decision making (FGDM) policy and practice in hundreds of communities. In the course of all of this, American Humane staff have fielded many of the same questions about FGDM. This document, then, presents the most commonly asked questions and issues, and provides clear and succinct responses to them. Among others dealt with herein are the following: the role of the referring worker; the role of the coordinator; the roles of parents, foster parents, extended family members, and support people; the status of information relating to a case and shared at a family group conference; developing and following up on a family plan; and types of families suitable for FGDM.
