Because big-picture models of mediation remain elusive, this chapter proposes a model that: (1) synthesizes a large segment of the mediation literature; (2) operationally defines and distinguishes between antecedent and process components of mediation; (3) operationally defines indicators of effectiveness; (4) offers a model for scholars to use in whole or in part to test numerous hypotheses and theories pertaining to the mediation of interpersonal disputes; and (5) offers the same model to mediation practitioners and trainers as an organizing framework for understanding mediation processes, the things that might influence mediations, the phases and dynamics, and potential results, short- and long-term. The proposed model and all the resources that go into the description of the model are not offered as an immutable “word”. We offer the model as a resource, not a box. Indeed, our hope is that the model intrigues scholars and practitioners alike, challenges and clarifies thinking and most of all encourages readers to create new knowledge and more reflective practices in mediation and allied helping interventions.
