The YOA was a response to a perceived need for alternative methods of dealing with young people in trouble. While clearly its primary focus is diverting young people from the court system it is also dependant on a philosophical approach to the management of juvenile justice. This chapter examines the process of youth justice conferencing in New South Wales within the context of the theory and aims of the restorative justice movement. It draws on the findings from a study completed in 2004 that utilized a case study approach to examine in depth the process and dynamics involved in youth justice conferences in New South Wales.
