In this chapter I review the social, political, individual, cultural, criminological and economic impact of alcohol on indigenous peoples. There is little doubt that the introduction of alcohol has had a long-term negative impact, but that effect is not limited to the social structures of indigenous peoples. I suggest that, to some extent, alcohol was used by Europeans not only as a means of profit making but also as a means of colonization and subjugation. I also argue here that some segments of the European-origin population continue to use alcohol as a tool to demoralize, demean and disenfranchise indigenous peoples, as well as a way to enrich themselves.
