"In the framework of examples of good practices with respect to criminal justice and prison, this article deals with conditional release and the work done in France to prevent former prisoners' reoffending. "The article begins by describing the great increase in the prison population in France and the possible means of reducing these alarming figures. The number of prisoners doubled over a twenty-year period and, after falling for five years recently, has now started to rise again. "The research--carried out in the Prison Administration Directorate in association with Pierre V. Tournier--brought out the importance of the relationship between adjusting sentences and the reintegration of released prisoners in society." (excerpt)
