Summary

Nelson, Tom and Ruecker, Stan and Pacher, Constanza Like It Is: A Game of Rapport for Restorative Justice for Young Offenders in Canada. ThinkCycle.org.

We outline a proposed method for involving young offenders in a program designed to forestall recidivism by helping to expand their understanding of their environment. Through repeated playing of a board game centred on role-playing and discussion, the young offenders will hear a variety of opinions related to their actions, and will actively engage in role-playing their own and other community roles. Although this project is still under development, the method has been successfully used in the past for participants with a range of behavioural difficulties, including alcoholics and juvenile delinquents, and for a number of situations in which conformity to group norms is important, including projects for residents in nursing homes and students in elementary schools. By upgrading the materials with content appropriate for this demographic and a contemporary design, we hope to be able to introduce it successfully among young offenders and other members of the community.
