The field of transitional justice has developed rapidly in the past 20 years – from one rooted firmly in the legal sphere and with a focus on prosecutions and retributive justice, to a field that today integrates the larger needs of postconflict societies– including reparations for victims, memorialization initiatives, the rebuilding of social relationships, cultural and educational endeavors and the reintegration of combatants. Each of these elements has a role to play in acknowledging the past, prioritizing the needs of victims and restoring the humanity of all who are party to a conflict. (excerpt)
