Written files recorded by the Hamilton Abuse Intervention Pilot Project were used to create a database of 528 records of police incidents which involved a physical assault involving family or people in a close relationship during 1991-1994. The type of violence that children witnessed and experiences and how the children reacted at the come were analyzed. This paper presents these results, discusses the possible longer term effects of the violence on these children and suggests options for us as a society to protect the children more effectively.
