This essay argues that community service sanctions must be reexamined in the context of a new "Balanced Approach" mission for probation and community corrections The restorative justice paradigm provides an alternative philosophical justification for service sanctions that may mitigate against tendencies to emphasize punitiveness in implementation. Performance objectives for community supervision can be used to develop guidelines for quality in community service.
