"This chapter will focus on policies and practices that may appear at first sight as the nearest French equivalent to the English phrase 'justice and community': la justice de proximite. After some hesitation I shall use the literal translation of the French words, thus 'proximity justice' rather than 'community justice'. For even if the latter sounds more English, the literal rendering corresponds more closely to the situation in France, reflecting the gap exisitng between the French and the 'Anglo-American' ways to reach out to cummunities."
