van Swaaningen, Rene (2008). Sweeping the Street: civil society and community safety in Rotterdam In Joanna Shapland, ed., Justice, Community and Civil Society: A contested terrain. Devon, UK: Willan Publishing. Pp. 87-106.

"What is the role of civil society in the development of local crime and safety politics? That is the question I would like to address in this chapter. The two articles mentioned above show a rather contradictory picture. On the one hand, people are in favour of stiffer sanctions, and on the other hand they claim not to like the fact that society is developing in that direction. The people's desire for more community and more solidarity is notably not reflected in their reactions to crime and nuisance." (Abstract)
