"...In light of this, my chapter poses a straightforward question: why did Ireland prove to be such a late arrival in terms of policy developments in the field of police-community relations? The answer to this lies, I argue, in the relationship between policing and constructions of community in Ireland. Specifically, I argue that policing functioned as a means through which the canons of Irish cultural nationalism were asserted by privileging specific conceptions of community and identity."
