This study gathered data from 50 face-to-face interviews with victims of burglary committed by juveniles in Hennepin County, MN. Three dimensions of fairness emerged: punishment of the offender, compensation of the victim and rehabilitation of the offender. Ninety-seven percent of those who participated in mediation indicated that they were treated fairly in the session, and victims found it helpful to meet with their offender in 86% of the cases. These findings suggest that placing certain victims in a more active role in the criminal justice process should be more broadly considered by criminal justice policymakers.
