This survey reports that during the past decade, more than 50 communities in the U.S. have initiated Victim Offender Reconciliation Programs (VORPs), correctional programs that employ both conflict resolution and restitution techniques. Victims and offenders confront each other in the presence of a trained mediator; victims are able to ask questions and express their feelings to offenders. Offenders are held personally accountable for their actions, and are called to take responsibility for repairing damage caused by their criminal behavior.
