US Groups Organize Restorative Justice Commemoration

Several US groups have organized a Restorative Justice commemoration for April 14-21, 2002. The traditional date for commemorating Restorative Justice Week is the third week in November, however this compete with the US Thanksgiving holiday. Hence the date change.
The U.S. Restorative Justice Week 2002 is organized around the theme of  “Visionary Law”. This term refers to a movement in the legal community that aims “to change lawyers into peacemakers in a new justice paradigm”.  Impetus for the commemoration came from the Friends Committee on Restorative Justice and Renaissance Lawyers.  Other sponsors include

  • Center for Restorative Justice, Suffolk University
  • Criminal Justice Policy Foundation
  • Healings of Persons Exceptional
  • The Coalition for Equity and Restorative Justice

  • Fundación CEPPA- Centro de Estudios para la Paz (San Jose, Costa Rica)
  • The Maine Council of Churches
  • Radical Education Community.

So far, the planned activities span a wide array of topics and locations with  several communities acting as major event hubs. Below is a tentative schedule. Please note that these dates and locations are subject to change.

    • Center for Restorative Justice at Suffolk University (Elise Boulding "building peaceful communities")

  • Maine

    • Ken Hamilton (HOPE) is looking at options across Maine and New England. He will lead a program on voluntary apologies as they relate to restorative justice.

  • Radical Forgiveness Workshops

    • Radical Forgiveness Ceremony: April 17, 7:00 – 9:30pm. Unity of Phoenix, 1500 East Greenway Pkwy, Phoenix. No booking necessary. Directions 602-978-3200

    • Radical Forgiveness Ceremony: April 19, 7:00 – 9:30pm, Reunion Center, 140 Mayhew Way, Pleasant Hill, CA. No booking necessary. Directions 925-946-0645. 

    • Colin Tipping, author of Radical Forgiveness, will do two workshops during the week.  www.radicalforgiveness.com

      Other activities being discussed include

      • Nightly conference calls on topics related to restorative justice
      • Relationship of Restorative Justice to School Community
      • Relationship between various factions of restorative justice movement
      • Reintegration of Offender into communities (how are we doing?)
      • Drug Concerns in prison and how they relate to restorative justice (formal proposal on table)
      • Youth as restorative leaders
