UN Crime Commission Acts on Basic Principles
At its Eleventh Session, the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice approved a Canadian resolution that encourages countries to draw from Basic Principles on the Use of Restorative Justice Programmes in Criminal Matters in developing and implementing restorative justice.
Restorative Justice Consortium Develops New Principles For Restorative Justice.
The Restorative Justice Consortium published the first “Standards for Restorative Justice” in 1998. Criticism of the original document, and international developments in the field of restorative justice, led to the decision to update them. This task was carried out by a working party comprised of academics and practitioners.
Full Implementation of Referral Orders in England and Wales
As of April 2002, Courts in England and Wales now have a new disposal option for young offenders pleading guilty or convicted of first offenses. Originally set forth in the 1999 Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act, the referral order scheme underwent an 18-month evaluation of 11 pilot projects between March 2000 and August 2001.
Peacemaking in Indonesia
In 1999, Duane Ruth-Heffelbower took a leave of absence from his graduate faculty position at Fresno Pacific University’s Center for Peacemaking and Conflict Studies to accept an invitation to join the faculty of Duta Wacana Christian University (UKDW) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia under an appointment from the Mennonite Central Committee.
