Website of the Month: Youth Justice Board for England And Wales

The Youth Justice Board is an official public body working in crime prevention in England and Wales. The board has created the Youth Justice System, which seeks to be a crime prevention agency and provide diversion for young offenders at all levels of the system. Restorative Justice is a key component to the youth justice strategy. Originally, the Board maintained the Restorative Justice Knowledge Bank. The information has been incorporated into this parent site for the Youth Justice Board.


Restorative Justice is now a part of the practitioners’ portal of the Youth Justice Board. Features of the site include

 

Restorative Justice: The Government’s Strategy was released in July 2003 and details the government’s commitment to restorative justice.

 

Key Elements of Effective Practice: Restorative Justice provides guidelines for quality standards for practitioners in the system and key outcomes.

 

Disposals lists the different options for responding to youth offending. According to the site, restorative justice is the underlying theory of each of these options.

 

The Youth Justice Board incorporates many programmes and projects. The site is a wealth of information with references to restorative justice being filtered throughout. Features include

 

Practitioners’ Portal providing information for those working in the youth justice system

 

The System outlines the Youth Justice Systems and the agencies that participate in the process.

 

Youth Offending Teams describes the multi-agency teams working in each area to address youth offending.

 

Youth Offender Panel describes the three person teams that work with young offenders in responding to specific crimes. These teams are comprised of 1 Youth Justice Board member and two community volunteers.

 

Publications provides a listing and description of all the Youth Justice Board publications.
