Website of the Month: Khulisa

Khulisa is a non-governmental organization providing community development programmes and reintegration and rehabilitation programmes for at-risk youth and young offenders. Restorative justice philosophy underpins the organization's work to rebuild relationships between the offenders, their families and the community. Introduction provides a description of the organization, its history, and programmes.

Programmes provides a description of the programme development process, the philosophy behind that development, and the characteristics essential to all Khulisa programmes. The programmes include:

  • MIB (Make it Better) trains young leaders to be contributing members to their communities

  • New Directions supports incarcerated youth and their parents. The programme focuses on eight areas for support: life skills, emotional intelligence development, community service, mentorship, recreation activities, parental development, post programme support, and restorative justice.

  • Discovery is an in-prison programme helping offenders to gain a self-awareness and become more responsible for their behavior.

  • Destinations connects participants in Khulisa’s in prison programmes with opportunities for employment after release.

The Khulisa Quest-UK describes a visit of young offenders from Khulisa programmes to London to share experiences in the rehabilitation and reintegration programmes.
