What is the Research Tool?

Document Actions
The Research Tool makes it possible to search nearly 6,000 articles, papers or books on restorative justice. It provides bibliographic information on the publications, typically with a short summary. Many have links to the complete text of the article. This service, formerly called the Articles Library, typically receives more visits each month than any other part of RJ Online.

The database has also been moved to new software and offers expanded search functions.

  • Search exact phrase by using “” (e.g. “victim-offender mediation)
  • Search all words by placing + before the word (e.g. +mediation +conferencing)
  • Search any of the words by simply typing the words into the search space
  • Exclude words from searches by using – (mediation -conferencing)
  • Use wild card searches to look for variations of a word (e.g. med* for mediation, mediating, and mediate”

Search results are listed in order by publication date with the most recently published article appearing first. Searches may also be limited to those that are available online.

The information in the database comes from several sources. The initial "floor" of this collection was an annotated bibliography prepared by Dr. Paul McCold for the Working Party on Restorative Justice of the Alliance of NGOs on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.  That bibliography was published as Restorative Justice: Annotated Bibliography in 1997.  The publisher is Criminal Justice Press, of Monsey, NY.  Criminal Justice Press holds the copyright to this publication, and gave Restorative Justice Online permission to use it in this library.

The RJ Online team works to update the database on a daily bases. This includes searching the web for new publications that have been posted, using other research databases to identify new publications, and submissions from RJ Online users.

If you have recommendations about articles to add to the collection, questions or comments about any documents that are included, or suggestions about the Articles Library, please contact us.
