In this article Judith Leest provides an overview of the current situation with respect to restorative justice in the Netherlands. She sketches the following ways in which restorative justice is being applied in the Netherlands: victim-offender mediation for adults; family group conferencing for young offenders; restorative justice within youth prisons; community mediation; and peer mediation in schools. As she points out, these various efforts range from small pilot projects in only a few places to more mature programs in a number of locations. In general, however, Leest believes that restorative justice has yet to gain a firm foundation in the Netherlands.
