Dagmar Dergelova is a probation officer with the Probation and Mediation Service in the Czech Republic. In this article Dergelova summarizes a workshop held in Prague, 15-16 May 2003. The theme of the workshop was “Justice and Balance: Victim, Offender and Community Perspectives.â€? Participants came from a number of European counties. Most participants were members of probation services; but there were also judges, public prosecutors, prison service staff, and social service staff. Through presentations and discussion, and with attention to similarities and differences among their various countries, they examined certain topics: restorative justice theory and strategy; restorative justice and the role of the prosecutor; victim oriented work with offenders post-sentence; and probation and mediation.
