A very large percentage of prison inmates in New York State are serving time for alcohol- and drug-related offenses. Thousands are released from state prisons every year having received little treatment for their misuse of and addiction to alcohol, drugs, or both. In this context Penelope Lee profiles the work of Father Peter Young, a Catholic priest in New York with long experience in counseling substance abusers in prison and in assisting ex-offenders. Lee highlights Father Young’s perspectives on substance abuse and the deeper problems that give rise to abuse, as well as his programs that provide treatment, housing, and work for ex-offenders who are re-entering society.
