Restorative Justice Week is a week dedicated to education about and advancement of restorative justice among churches and the public in general. Affiliated with the Church Council on Justice and Corrections, Lorraine Berzins participated in a panel presentation at a public forum entitled “Restorative justice: Humanizing justice,â€? during Restorative Justice Week 2003, held in Ottawa, Canada, November 19. She begins her remarks with affirmations of restorative justice and the people who promote and apply restorative ideas and practices. At the same time Berzins cautions about the future of restorative justice. She expresses concern that the recent progress of restorative justice may not continue because assumptions in the general culture in Canada equate justice with courts and prisons, not with restorative principles and processes. In her presentation, Berzins details why this is so and how advocates of restorative justice can work to change this.
