In January 1999, the Alberta provincial government convened the Alberta Summit on Justice to improve public confidence and community participation in the justice system. The summit was held in Calgary, Alberta. In 1998, prior to the summit, public meetings with the same purposes were held in seventeen communities across Alberta. This document consists of the John Howard Society of Alberta’s response to the summit. The Society characterizes the Canadian criminal justice system as a one dimensional, law-and-order approach to sanctioning, an approach based on the principles of retribution. Challenging the assumptions, language, and practices of this system, the Society advocates its replacement with a system based on crime prevention strategies and restorative justice alternatives.
