This chapter looks at whether it is possible that the current experimentation with restorative justice in the Netherlands will expand to become institutionalized. The first part of the chapter discusses the concept of institutionalization from a fundamental sociological viewpoint. The author then discusses the current restorative justice practices of the Netherlands, first as informal restorative practices that are not seen as being related to criminal justice and secondly as those that are intended to be related to criminal justice. The final sections look to answer the following: to what extent is restorative justice becoming institutionalized and is the transformation of criminal justice going to produce a distinguishable result?
