Our purpose in this chapter is to expand the concept of facework and to place it at the center of mediation communication. For us, facework is an overriding context for understanding disputant behavior and mediator interventions. We undertake several tasks in this chapter. First we present a brief survey of literature on facework to provide a general background on the concept. Second, we expand the concept of facework and construct a meta-frame in which mediation practice can be understood. Third, we use this framework to support and enhance the model presented by Herrman, Hollet, and Gale in chapter 2. Finally, we discuss some implications of our work. (excerpt).
