he Student Advocate- Leadership Programs will be on the front lines, implementing best practice student leadership programming at select Umoja partner high schools and building proactive relationships with students, teachers, administrative staff, and other community organizations. This position is a program and curriculum developer, a facilitator of student groups and relationships, and coordinator of program logistics and administration. Through the design and implementation of leadership development programming that is academically rigorous, promotes student voice, and addresses social-emotional learning and postsecondary development, the Student Advocate will work closely with schools and communities to address the holistic needs of their young people and change school culture. Combining passion and creativity with strong planning, organizational, and facilitation skills, this position will create curriculum, develop and facilitate programming with students, assist in strategic direction and planning of Umoja leadership programming, and build relationships with partner school staff and Administration. This position reports directly to Umoja’s Director of Leadership and Justice.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Partner with Umoja staff in the execution of Umoja leadership programming at Umoja’s partner schools:

  • Assist in creating and facilitating weekly leadership development programming for multiple student leadership groups 
  • Mange relationships with students involved in Umoja leadership programs including recruitment of participants and ongoing case management 
  • Work closely with school staff and administration to coordinate and support student led Restorative Justice and school culture building initiatives and projects 
  • Engage and communicate with school stakeholders (parents, students, staff, etc.) regarding student leadership work 

2. Collaborate with Director of Leadership and Justice on general Umoja Leadership programming

  • Assist in planning and coordinating field trips, retreats, conferences, and trainings for students involved in Umoja leadership programming 
  • Support the planning, preparation, and implementation of Umoja’s summer student leadership internship, Community Builders 
  • Participate in creating overall vision of and strategy for Umoja leadership programming that integrates social emotional learning, post secondary development, academic rigor, and meaningful student 
  • Build relationships and collaborate with other youth development organizations and programs 

3. Complete all organizational documentation and reporting requirements for services, activities, evaluation, and program expenses
4. Support the development safe youth-centered spaces for all students and staff at partner schools
