Lesson 9: Systemic Issues

Among others, systemic issues related to designing and maintaining a restorative system of justice include the following:

  • implementation describes the vision for maintaining and implementing a restorative system of justice while adapting it to meet systemic demands;
  • modelling describes four basic models of an implemented restorative justice system:
    • replacement
    • incorporation
    • dual-track modelling
    • diversion
  • co-option describes the susceptibility of restorative justice programs to the distorting influences of the traditional system;
  • net-widening explores the extent to which restorative justice could widen the net of social control by accepting cases that would have otherwise not been pursued through formal processes.
